The Romanians have known Focsani, called in some scripts "The town on the Milkov River", the capital city of the Vrancea District of today, as "The Town of Unification". Considered unofficially the first capital city of the United Principalities of Moldova and Muntenia, it was under this aureole that the town has won its place in history. It was here that after January 24, 1859, the first establishments of the new state began to function, based on which the United National Romanian State was established after the Great Unification in 1918.
The Milkov River flowing through the town was also the border between Moldova and Muntenia (Valahia) until 1859, when the two Romanian Principalities united. The Moldavian part of the town is bigger and more ancient.

As to the name of the locality, various sources of information exist, and therefore several hypotheses were put forward. Some tend to believe in a foreigner traveling through the Romanian Principalities by the middle of the 19th century, who in his notes mentioned that the town was known since Vasile Lupu, the ruler of Moldova between 1634 and 1653, believed to have built it here, together with Matei Basarab, ruler of Muntenia from 1632 to 1654, to witness their reconciliation. Others say that the name derives from the two words "foc" (Fire) and "ani" (Years), as the locality has been burnt up several times. Other archeological documents dating from 1574 confirm the existence of a small settlement on the shores of the Milkov River, which over the time became of the town of Focsani.
